I wanted to try out something a bit less cartoonish with my tablet. I'm kind of happy with how it came out, but it does look kind of bland/flat. It probably needs more highlights and textures. Figuring out the lighting took me ages and I'm still not sure I have it right :Shruggie: {free to use emote}

I'd appreciate some criticism on this if you're willing (thanks in advance! And try not to be too nice you guys :D)

EDIT: So I tried making a few changes to this based on your feedback. I think it looks heaps better (still struggling with a few things, I need lots of practice!). Thanks for commenting guys, and special thanks to sylessae for her critique :D

First off, that I'd like to say - great job for tackling something you're not used to! Challenging yourself is how you'll grow, and I think this piece is a step in the right direction! I love your cartoony stuff too, but I think you did a great job with this!

You're heading in the right direction with the light! You're applying it correctly to the character by using the color to brighten where the light hits rather than white (REALLY good job on that! A lot of people instinctively want to use white to brighten something.)

Getting the shading right is all about practice. Study photographs of people who are struck by intense lighting. You'll notice that the bright parts of them become even more pronounced, while the parts that the light isn't interacting, grow darker.

The spell/charm he is casting is awesome! I can't even begin to explain amazing that detailing is. Give it a glow though, around the edges - so we know it's glowing beyond just seeing the extra light on him!

His expression is very intense - he looks like he's very focused on casting that spell and I think it suits the scene! But the skin looks a bit flat beyond the yellow that is cast upon his chin. His eyes sockets would be darker, as well as the top of his nose, and his brow!

Keep up the good work - your stuff is awesome!
